How San Diego small businesses can get found on Google
By Amy Simpfenderfer ·
When someone in San Diego needs a florist, a dog groomer or a bookkeeper, they usually search Google and choose from the first few results. Showing up there isn't luck. A few simple steps can make a big difference, and most of them don't cost anything.
1. Claim your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the box of local results. It's free, and for many small businesses it brings in more calls than the website itself.
- Choose the most accurate primary category, like "Florist" or "Marriage counselor."
- If you serve clients at their location, set a service area, such as San Diego, Chula Vista and Escondido, and hide your home address.
- Add your hours, website, services and a short, clear description.
- Upload real photos of your work, your space and your team, and add new ones regularly.
2. Ask for reviews, every time
Reviews are one of the strongest signals in local search, and they help customers choose you over the business next door. Make it easy: send a short link after each project or purchase, and reply to every review, good or bad. A steady trickle of new reviews is better than a burst once a year.
3. Tell Google where you are on your website
Your website should make it obvious which area you serve. That sounds simple, but many sites never mention a city at all.
- Include your city in your homepage headline or intro, for example "Wedding florist in San Diego."
- Give each page its own SEO title and description that mentions what you do and where. In Squarespace, you'll find these in each page's settings.
- List your service areas, plus your address if customers visit you, in the footer or on your contact page.
- Keep your business name, address and phone number exactly the same everywhere, from your site to Google to Yelp.
4. Write about what local customers ask
Every question a customer asks you is something someone else is searching for. A short FAQ section or a few helpful articles, like "How much does catering cost for a San Diego wedding?", give Google more reasons to send local visitors your way. Mention neighborhoods and nearby cities where it makes sense, without stuffing in keywords.
5. Make the site fast and easy on a phone
Most local searches happen on phones, often while someone is out and about. Make sure your site loads quickly, your phone number can be tapped to call, and the most important information is near the top. Compress large images before uploading them, and keep pages focused.
6. Be patient, then keep going
Local SEO builds over time. Most businesses see steady progress within a few months when they keep their profile updated, collect reviews and add useful content. It's less about tricks and more about being clear and consistent.
